Initiative unites menstrual health education, reusable pad production, skills training, and economic opportunity for girls and women in Uganda and Kenya
Doylestown, PA (PRUnderground) August 24th, 2026

Girl Power USA is running a fundraising campaign for Period Power, an initiative addressing period poverty through menstrual health education, access to menstrual products, reusable pad production, and skills development for girls and women in African communities.
For many girls and women, menstruation becomes a barrier to education, health, and community life because of limited access to products and accurate information. Period Power addresses the root of the problem by equipping communities with knowledge, skills, and resources to create and sustain their own solutions.
“Systematic issues such as period poverty don’t have one-time neat solutions,” said Simran, director of Girl Power USA. “They require local context, adaptation, and continuous investment in communities to begin to change the status quo and bring change, one girl at a time.”
A Sustainable Approach to Menstrual Health
In Uganda, Kenya, and India, Girl Power USA pairs menstrual health education and access to menstrual products with hands-on skills training. The organization has distributed over 1,000 sanitary pads through menstrual health education events and partnered with organizations in the communities to reach girls in India.
Girl Power USA is scaling up its reusable pad-making program, building on a recent workshop attended by its Associate Director and two partners in 2024. The next phase equipped Sophia from the Pass Maa Foundation to start her own program in Uganda with sewing machines and raw materials. Through the pilot production run, the program has created 500 reusable pads and trained 65 girls in the skill.
By pairing menstrual health education with local production and skills development, Period Power aims to create a model that can expand access to menstrual products while building skills, income, and economic opportunity within the communities it serves.
The Period Power program has partnered with Astercare and Together for Better in the past. Community partners include Country Child Network, E-Enable, and the Paa Maa Foundation.
