WAILUKU, HI, UNITED STATES, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Shaping Mission-Driven Storytelling Through Flexibility, Creativity, and Connection
Wailuku, Hawaii – Katie Mecklenburg is the Director of Communications at Imua Family Services, a nonprofit serving children and families across Maui, Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi. In her role, she leads strategic communications, brand development, media outreach, and digital storytelling efforts, with a growing emphasis on elevating the organization’s clinical and early-intervention services. Her work focuses on reshaping public messaging to reflect the full scope of Imua’s impact, including preschool programs, newborn screenings, and occupational and physical therapy services, while strengthening community awareness and fundraising communications.
Katie’s career path has been non-linear, spanning wellness, retail, and digital marketing. She began her professional journey in yoga studio management with Island Power Yoga, where she developed early experience in promotion and community engagement. She later moved into marketing and design work with Cake Media and served in retail leadership at Welzie Art. These experiences allowed her to develop a versatile skill set while discovering the value of creativity, adaptability, and meaningful connections with audiences.
Her professional experience also includes contributing to public media governance through the Community Advisory Board of Hawaii Public Radio. Through this work, Katie has helped provide community perspectives on programming and outreach, connecting her interest in communication and public engagement with her broader commitment to serving the community.
Katie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Colorado State University. Her professional focus centers on strategic communications, audience-centered storytelling, social media strategy, and visual design, with a strong emphasis on adaptability in evolving digital landscapes. She brings more than a decade of experience across marketing and communications roles, shaped by a commitment to clear messaging, community engagement, and mission-driven work.
Katie attributes her success to her love of creativity and flexibility. What drew her to communications and marketing, and what she continues to love about the field, is that it is always changing and requires her to be flexible, respond to what is happening, and adapt to new circumstances. While there might be an outline of what her day looks like, she never knows exactly what she will be working on because things change all the time, and she loves that aspect of the work.
Those same challenges continue to shape her work as Director of Communications, where she has taken on an expanded capacity and creates different strategic initiatives for fundraising while sharing the entirety of the organization’s work, rather than focusing only on events. Katie particularly values having the opportunity to create as a primary part of her job. While she sometimes needs a checklist to make sure everything gets done, communications and marketing give her the opportunity to be highly creative while developing strategies that serve the organization’s mission.
Working alongside her current boss, whom she describes as a very visionary person, and the incredible team at Imua Family Services has also been key to Katie’s growth and success. The combination of strong leadership, collaborative relationships, and opportunities to create has helped her continue developing her approach to communications while taking on broader responsibilities.
An important part of Katie’s professional philosophy comes from advice she received early in her career. When she was around 24 or 25, she went through a period when she was very focused on her job and experiencing significant stress. A mentor gave her permission to turn off and disconnect, an approach that has served her well throughout her career.
For Katie, the lesson has been about creating space between professional responsibilities and personal life. She believes strongly in having a life outside of work while remaining driven, focused, and committed to growth professionally. Working when she is working and disconnecting when she is not allows her to manage her responsibilities while also giving herself the freedom to refill her own cup. Creating that separation has become an important part of how she approaches both her career and personal well-being.
Balance, creativity, and connection are among the values most important to Katie. Her commitment to balance extends into an active lifestyle that gives her opportunities to recharge outside of work. She is an avid runner who has completed seven marathons and has been committed to practicing and teaching yoga for 20 years. Living on Maui also gives her access to the outdoor activities she enjoys most.
Katie adopted her dog from the Maui Humane Society two years ago, and the two enjoy spending time together at the beach, hiking, and running. The islands offer abundant opportunities to be outside, making outdoor activity an important part of her free time and a natural complement to her professional life.
Her interests also extend to news and political science. Katie considers herself a news junkie and enjoys reading the news, an interest that connects naturally with her background in political science and her work with the Community Advisory Board of Hawaii Public Radio. Her varied interests continue to inform the way she engages with communities and thinks about communication.
At this stage of her career, Katie is also prioritizing connection with women who are strong leaders, visionary, and interested in being changemakers. Having worked alongside strong women throughout her career, she values relationships with women who want to elevate other women rather than create competition.
As she has stepped into leadership within a nonprofit structure where there are fewer women in leadership than men, Katie finds it particularly important to connect with women who lift one another up. For her, those relationships reflect the same principles that have guided her career: creativity, connection, adaptability, and a commitment to making space for meaningful growth.
Through her work at Imua Family Services, Katie continues to apply those principles to strategic communications, fundraising initiatives, digital storytelling, and community engagement. Her non-linear career path has given her experience across multiple industries, while her commitment to creativity and flexibility continues to shape the way she approaches an ever-changing communications landscape.
