Award-winning poet and author Casey Robb invites readers into a world where tragedy and humor collide in her new collection, Carla, Swept Away: A Journey Through Ten Stories. Bringing together ten previously published short stories, the collection explores the complexity of human experience through tales of hardship, unexpected circumstances, redemption, and the wonderfully strange moments that make life memorable.
The collection is divided into two distinct sections. The seven stories in “Dark Shadows” confront serious and often painful themes, including cruelty, bigotry, betrayal, death, genocide, and disability. Yet even in the face of suffering, the stories ultimately turn toward the possibility of redemption and the lessons that can emerge from difficult experiences.
The remaining three stories, gathered under “Just for Fun—Wacky & Wild,” take readers in an entirely different direction. These stories follow characters caught in sticky, unpredictable situations who navigate their problems in wildly funny and unexpected ways.
For Robb, the characters themselves were the inspiration behind the collection.
“My characters are always bubbling up, demanding to be heard. It’s been a great pleasure to bring them to life in colorful stories.”
Many of the stories also contain threads of memoir, giving the collection an additional layer of authenticity and personal connection.
At its heart, Carla, Swept Away delivers a message about finding meaning even when life becomes difficult. Robb reminds readers that hurt and grief are part of the human experience, but difficult seasons can also reveal lessons, redemption, and unexpected blessings. At the same time, she encourages readers to embrace the strange, unpredictable, and sometimes downright wacky nature of life.
Robb brings a remarkable range of life experiences to her writing. A former physical therapist and retired civil engineer from Texas, she now lives in Northern California near her two adopted daughters. She is an award-winning poet whose interests and adventures have included reading, writing, fiddling, horses, world travel, quilting, learning languages, and living abroad. One of her greatest adventures was adopting two babies from overseas as a single mother.
Her literary work also includes Morning Glory Moon: A Weaving of Free Verse & Forms, a poetry collection published by The Poetry Box in March 2026.
With its blend of poignant storytelling, difficult truths, colorful characters, and unexpected humor, Carla, Swept Away: A Journey Through Ten Stories offers readers a collection that refuses to view life through only one lens. It acknowledges the darkness while making room for laughter, celebrates resilience, and finds beauty in the unpredictable journey of being human.
