CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Aug. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Edelson Lechtzin LLP, a national class action law firm, is investigating data privacy claims arising from the AdaptHealth Corp. (Nasdaq: AHCO) data breach. AdaptHealth Corp., a publicly traded provider of home medical equipment, diabetes supplies, and sleep therapy products, disclosed a material cybersecurity incident to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on or about July 2, 2026, after a threat actor gained unauthorized access to its systems and stole patient data. The firm is investigating whether AdaptHealth failed to adequately protect the personal and health information entrusted to it.
What Happened
On or about July 2, 2026, AdaptHealth Corp. disclosed the data breach to the SEC in a Form 8-K filing. According to that filing and news reports, a threat actor contacted AdaptHealth on June 15, 2026, claiming to have obtained files containing patient data, and the company later confirmed that data had been exfiltrated. AdaptHealth determined on June 27, 2026 that the incident was material because of the nature and potential volume of the data at risk.
The incident is reported to have resulted from a social engineering attack that compromised the credentials of a third-party contractor. Using that access, the threat actor reached certain cloud-based business applications, including internal patient management systems and document storage platforms, and obtained a stored password file tied to insurance billing along with access to external electronic health record portals.
News reports indicate the attack appears to be a data theft and extortion attempt by the threat group known as ShinyHunters, which reportedly added AdaptHealth to its data leak site and threatened to publish the stolen data unless a ransom is paid.
Information Exposed
According to AdaptHealth and news reports, the affected data includes patients’ personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), and passwords associated with insurance billing. The full scope of the data taken, the specific data types involved, and the number of affected individuals remain under investigation.
Who May Be Impacted
Patients and customers of AdaptHealth Corp. whose personal or health information was stored in the affected systems may be at risk. Individuals who received a data breach notification from AdaptHealth Corp. may face an increased risk of identity theft, insurance fraud, and misuse of their protected health information.
